The 10 Best Treatments for Impetigo 2020: Reviews & Guide

November 10, 2022 by sudan

If you got red sores, particularly around your mouth or nose, then you might have impetigo, You will need the best treatments for impetigo. Impetigo is a skin infection caused by particular bacteria and can spread easily. It usually affects young children and babies, however, adults can have it too!

Understanding Impetigo

Impetigo is an old disease and its name dates back to the 14th century England. The term comes from impetere, a Latin word meaning “to attack”.

Impetigo is a bacterial infection on the outer layers of the skin and is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or Staphylococcus aureus. The most affected skin areas are usually on the legs, arms, and face.

Anyone can have impetigo; however, it is more common among kids, particularly 2 to 5 years old. As a matter of fact, impetigo accounts for around 10% of skin problems in pediatric clinics.

The bacterial infection usually begins as rashes like eczema, insect bites or minor cuts, almost any place where the skin is damaged. However, it can also occur on healthy skin.

What Are The Symptoms?

Impetigo sores can appear anywhere in the body, however, children usually get them on the face and sometimes show up on their legs and arms.

The infected spot can range from a dime to quarter size. These sores start as tiny blisters which break and show moist, red skin. In a few days, this spots will get covered by a grainy and gold crust which will then spreads at the edges.

The bacterial infection can invade a deeper layer of the skin and change into a type of impetigo called ecthyma. In this case, the patient will have pus-filled bumps with crusts that are much thicker and darker than ordinary impetigo.

This can be very itchy and if the patient scratches it more, then the Infection can spread more quickly. If not treated, the sores can cause permanent scars and change the skin color.

Is It Contagious?

Yes, it is!

The open sores are very contagious. Scratching it can spread the infection from one area on your skin to another, or to another individual. The infection might also spread from anything that the infected individual touches.

Since it spreads very fast, impetigo is also known as “school disease” It can rapidly spread from kid to kid in a classroom where children are in close contact. It also spreads quickly in families for the very same reason.

In order to control the contagiousness of impetigo, hygiene is the key. If you or your kid has impetigo then you need to disinfect and wash everything that the infection comes in contact with, including toys, towels, bedding, clothes or sports equipment.

3 Types of Impetigo

Impetigo is classified into 3 types based on the bacteria that caused them and the type of sores they create. Here are the 3 types of impetigo:

1. Nonbullous Impetigo

Also called as impetigo contagiosa, nonbullous impetigo is mainly caused by the Staphylococcus aureus but it can also be caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or a combination of both. With an estimated 70% cases, it is the most common type of impetigo that affects most people.

This type of impetigo typically starts with reddish spots which develop to small red blisters around the nose and mouth. The size of the blisters can range from 1 to 2 cm in diameter. These clusters of blisters can spread to other areas of the skin.

In a few days, the blisters will burst and develop brownish-yellow crusts with the surrounding skin look raw and red.

This type of impetigo is itchy; however, it is not that painful. Once the crusts healed, the reddish spots will then fade and do not leave scars.

2. Bullous Impetigo

Caused by Staphylococcus aureus, bullous impetigo typically forms bullae or larger blisters filled with a clear liquid which becomes cloudy and darker. These blisters can be 2 cm in diameter.

Usually, the blisters start to begin on an unbroken skin and are not surrounded by reddish areas. These blisters become limp, and then they burst open. After that, a yellowish crust will form over the sore.

This type of impetigo is usually seen in newborns, particularly in their neck folds and diaper area. For older ages, it usually appears in the legs, arms, and trunk. Just like nonbullous impetigo, bullous impetigo usually leaves no scars after healing.

3. Ecthyma

Caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes or both, ecthyma is a more serious form of impetigo.

Ecthyma forms little, pus-filled sores with thicker crusts and goes deeper into the skin than other types of impetigo. It can be very severe since it is sometimes accompanied by swollen glands.

Unlike the other two types of impetigo, ecthyma blisters can be quite painful and develop into deeper and larger sores between 0.5 and 3 cm in diameters. The sores progress with thick crusts and are surrounded by a reddish-purple skin.

Ecthyma usually appears on the feet, ankles, legs, thighs, and buttocks. Untreated bullous or nonbullous impetigo can sometimes develop into ecthyma. It heals slowly can leave scars after healing.

Complications of Impetigo

Although rare, impetigo can have complications, particularly with higher risk complication on adults. Complications of impetigo include:

  • SSSS OR STAPHYLOCOCCUS SCALDED SKIN SYNDROME: Another serious skin condition.
  • QUTTATE PSORIASIS: Non-infectious skin condition which can affect both young adults and children.
  • SCARLET FEVER: Rare bacterial infection caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • SEPSIS: Bacterial infection of the blood.
  • LYMPHANGITIS: Inflammation of lymphatic channels.
  • CELLULITIS: Serious bacterial infection of the tissues under the skin that can spread to the bloodstream.
  • POST-STREPTOCOCCAL GLOMERULONEPHRITIS: Serious inflammation of the kidneys’ small blood vessels.

Preventing Impetigo and Its Spreading

Children with impetigo are advised to stay home until their condition is no longer infectious. This is also advised to adults working in order to avoid close contact with others.

Good hygiene is the key in order to prevent impetigo and its spreading:

  • Do not share any personal items with someone suffering from impetigo
  • Disinfect and clean surfaces, toys, equipment which might have come in contact with impetigo
  • Change clothing, towels and bed linens every day, just until the sores are no longer infectious
  • Wash everything which comes in contact with impetigo stores in laundry bleach and hot water
  • Do not scratch or touch open sores since it will spread the infection
  • Keep your nails clean and clipped
  • Cover any insect bites or skin wounds in order to protect the area
  • Frequent hand washing and regular bathing can eliminate skin bacteria

Extra Tips for a Lung-Full of Air Every Time

Hydrate

Drinking lots of water can help in the thinning of the sticky mucus and making them easier to drain from the sinuses. Hydrating can also keep your mucous membranes moist.

Plain water is best. However, herbal teas may also help, particularly peppermint and ginger since these can help thin and loosen mucus. Licorice and holy basil can boost the immunity while marshmallow helps in soothing irritated nasal passageways.

Humidify

Indoor heating and cold air can dry out your respiratory tissues, worsening asthma, and other respiratory illness as well as increasing the risk of a sinus infection and upper respiratory tract infections.

If you live in a dry climate or during winter, consider using a humidifier which produces moist and warm air that helps in clearing excess mucus from the sinuses and lungs and lessen the irritation in the respiratory tract.

Steam vaporizers are affordable and are easy to maintain. Plus, they can be used with essential oils. Consider adding a few drops of spruce, pine, peppermint, or eucalyptus essential oils for faster relief.

Clean the House

Other than olds and dust, indoor air pollution is often blamed for sinus problems. In general, anything with fumes or something with very strong odors such as cleaners, hairsprays, perfumes, and cigarette can aggravate your sinus problem.

So, make sure that you keep your indoor space clean. Get rid of chemical cleaning products, if you must and make a switch to unscented and natural products.

Air purifiers can also help or consider an ozone generator which produces ozone that can remove airborne toxins as well as killing molds.

Get Some Sun

Basking in the early sun is the best way to boost your body’s level of vitamin D. This particular vitamin can help reduce sinus problems by boosting your immune functions. Specifically speaking, vitamin D can help suppress the inflammatory response and help your body prevent infections and viruses in the sinuses.

Around 10 – 15 minutes of direct sun at least 3 – 4 times a week is more than enough in order to help your body produce sufficient vitamin D. In case you are more than 70 years old, have a dark skin or spend very little time under the sun, then consider getting a vitamin D3 supplement.

Eat to Breathe

A diet rich in seeds, nuts, whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits, with moderate amounts of poultry, fish and dairy can help protect you from allergic respiratory diseases.

Foods that help in boosting your respiratory health includes:

  • Horseradish, ginger, onion, garlic, and cayenne peppers that helps in thinning mucus, breaking up congestion and clear out excess mucus.
  • Tomatoes are loaded with lycopene which helps in reducing asthma symptoms as well as improving pulmonary function.
  • Tea, citrus fruits and apples are loaded in quercetin which helps reduce inflammation and sinus problems.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids in flax, walnuts, fish, and hemp help in improving lung functions as well as decreasing asthma symptoms.

Sleep

Rest is very important in terms of supporting the body to heal and fight off infection. Therefore, you should avoid sleeping very late and have a good snooze.

But if you are having some trouble falling asleep due to sinus congestions and pain, then try to inhale steam before going to bed or use a humidifier or vaporizer in the bedroom to clear your nasal passage.

Also, keep your room dark and sleep with your head slightly elevated.

The 10 Best Skin Cream For Eczema 2022: Reviews & Guide

November 10, 2022 by sudan

Most people experience itchy and dry skin at some point in their daily lives. However, there is a huge difference between occasional itchy and dry patches and the scaly, red skin which is commonly associated with eczema or atopic dermatitis. That is the sign of Eczema, and you will have to use best skin cream for eczema.

Eczema is a skin condition where parts of your skin became rough, cracked, red, itchy, or inflamed as well as the occurrence of blisters. Eczema is a chronic problem for most people. This skin condition is most common in infants, many of whom outgrow this condition before reaching adulthood.

Symptoms of Eczema

Symptoms of eczema can vary and depends on the age of the individual with the condition. Eczema usually occurs in infants, with scaly and dry patches that appear on the skin and is often accompanied with intense itch.

Most individuals develop eczema before the age of 5 and half of those who develop this condition in childhood will continue to have the symptoms during adulthood.

People with this skin condition will usually experience periods of time where their symptoms worsen or flare-up followed by times when their symptoms clear up or improve.

Eczema Symptoms in Infants under 2 years old

  • Rashes with extreme itchiness and can interfere with sleeping. Continuous scratching or rubbing may lead to skin infections
  • Rashes that usually bubble up before leaking fluids
  • Rashes that commonly appear on the cheeks and scalps

Eczema Symptoms in Kids Aged 2 years old until puberty

  • Rashes that usually appears behind the creases of knees and elbows as well as on the ankles, wrists, neck and the creases between the legs and buttocks
  • Rashes might thicken in a process called “lichenification” where it develops knots and permanent itch
  • It may darken or lighten in color
  • Rashes may become bumpy

Eczema Symptoms in Adults

  • Rashes in adults are more “scaly: than those seen in children
  • Rashes can be permanently itchy
  • Dry skin
  • Rashes may cover much of the body
  • Rashes usually appear at the nape of the neck, or in the creases of the knees and elbows

Adults who suffered eczema as a kid but no longer experience the skin condition can still have a dry or easily-irritated skin, eye problems or hand eczema.

The appearance of skin part that is affected by eczema depends on how much it was scratched and whether it becomes infected or not. Rubbing and scratching further can irritate the skin, make itchiness worse and increase inflammation.

The Causes of Eczema

The specific cause of eczema is still unknown; however, it is believed to be developed because of environmental or genetic factors or a combination of both.

Children are more likely to develop eczema if one or both of their parents had the condition or another atopic disease. It is not contagious, though.

Environmental factors are also believed to bring out the symptoms of eczema like:

  • ALLERGENS: Dandruff, mold, pollens, pets and dust mites can lead to eczema.
  • IRRITANTS: These include disinfectants, shampoos, detergents, soaps as well as juices from vegetables and fruits.
  • MICROBES: Certain fungi, viruses, and bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus
  • FOODS: Some foods you might be allergic to like wheat, soy products, seeds and nuts, eggs and dairy products.
  • COLD AND HOT TEMPERATURES: Very cold or hot weather, low or high humidity, as well as perspiration from workouts and exercise, can bring out eczema.
  • HORMONES: Particularly in women, can experience an increase in eczema symptoms at times when their hormones are changing, for instance at certain points of their menstrual cycles or during pregnancy.
  • STRESS: Although it is not a direct cause of eczema, however, stress can make its symptoms worse.
